4 Must-Try Delicacies in France

So let’s say you succeeded in processing your Etias France travel document and find yourself wandering around France with time on your hands. Why not try out some well-loved French delicacies while you’re there?

Steak Tartare – A Taste of Freshness

If you don’t mind the fact that you’re going to eat something raw, then Steak Tartare is a must-taste dish in France. While the Japanese offer raw sushi in their restaurants, French restaurants have their own version of a raw delicacy in this dish. Of course, it pays to try this one as prepared by reputable restaurants because you’re not sure about their meal preparation practices. Aside from the secret seasoning, you may notice it has capers, onions and a raw egg yolk right on top.

Escargot, Anyone?

This dish is a simple one but one that has boosted the French cuisine’s reputation. It is actually made of cooked snails to which is added garlic butter mixed with parsley. Though some may snub this dish for its simplicity, you should at least sample one serving to see if it meets your own standards.

The Common Potato a.k.a. Hachis Parmentier

There was a time when potatoes were shunned as an ingredient in the country. Then a nutritionist named Antoine Parmentier showed the French that potatoes are actually tasty and nourishing. Hence, the name Hachis Parmentier. This dish is actually made of minced beef and mashed potatoes. So if you want to stick to something familiar such as potato dishes then this dish may be meant for you.

Crepes – Thin Yet Flavorful

This delicacy has been adopted by chefs in other countries but it remains truly French in origin. Though some may argue that crepes should be eaten only as a snack there are actually many opportunities to sample it throughout the day. You can try the traditional sweet version or you may go for the salty type instead. (The salty crepe is known as “Galette” actually.) You can also get creative and ask for other fillings for your crepes.

There are many other dishes you could opt to sample actually. Don’t leave France until you’ve gotten a taste of the best that the country’s kitchens have to offer. That makes the time spent processing your Etias France worth it.

The Difference Between ETIAS and Schengen Visa

At present, many nationalities can be granted entry to Europe even without a visa, for example, Spain. But it will all change in 2021 upon the implementation of the EU Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). Continuing the example, under the ETIAS, Spanish locals will need an Etias Spain to enter the European Union (EU). What exactly are the key differences between the ETIAS and the Schengen Visa?

The Schengen Visa

The Schengen Area in Europe puts aside all kinds of immigration control to allow free movement of citizens between the borders of their 26 member states. Locals of each member state can live in any of the Schengen countries without the need for any Visa. Some non-EU citizens planning to visit the Schengen area must apply for a Schengen visa.

The Etias Visa

Currently, there are over 60 countries all over the world that are not required a visa to travel to Europe, only a passport. With the implementation of ETIAS in 2021, those ‘visa-waived’ countries would have to apply for an ETIAS in addition to a valid passport.

Let’s Clear Everything Up

EU and Schengen nationals do not need ETIAS.

Non-EU nationals who are locals of the 60+ countries who presently don’t need a visa will now need an ETIAS upon entry in the EU. This is the classification that needs ETIAS.

Non-EU nationals who do need a visa in entering Europe, or countries classified as third-world, will not be eligible for ETIAS and would still need a Schengen visa.

Visitors to Europe who are eligible for ETIAS do not need a Schengen visa. Those who do not qualify for ETIAS will need a Schengen visa.

Other Notable Differences

An ETIAS is linked to the passport of the traveler allowing entrance to the European Union, but not necessarily Schengen. A Schengen visa is for one specific Schengen area member state only, and cannot be used as a ticket to free travel all around Europe.

An ETIAS application is filled out online. Payment of 7 Euros is needed along with the application. A Schengen Visa must be done in person at the embassy of the destination country. It takes a far longer time to furnish a Schengen visa than an ETIAS.

Europe remains one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the world because of its marked splendor and beauty. At present, many countries outside the EU are allowed visa-free entrance, but the ETIAS would cause a shift. Before admittance into the EU for travel, Spanish locals would now need an ETIAS Spain, as do other nationalities who were previously free to enter.

Lake Tahoe

The lake, nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountain ranges, is home to many campers, hitchhikers, and boaters. It is accessible year-round; during summer its calm waters provide a much-needed reprieve from the heat, and during winter its incredible terrain is perfect for skiing.

With sparkling turquoise waters and coves, Lake Tahoe is one prime destination in California.

Pfeiffer Beach

Pfeiffer beach is part of the Big Sur Californian coast. It may be entirely off the beaten path, but it is a place worth visiting. At times, the manganese and garnet particles washing from the neighboring hillside paint the sand a magnificent purple color.

It’s quiet and secluded, perfect for a long introspective stroll.

5 FAQs When Applying for an ETIAS Visa

Ever since the European Commission (EC) announced it in 2016, non-European tourists visiting European countries in the Schengen Zone are now required to obtain authorization with an ETIAS visa. Security concerns are stated as the main reason for the approval of ETIAS visa waivers. The most notable upside to the ETIAS, however, is that it is a quick and much more affordable authorization process compared to visas. Below are some commonly asked questions about getting an ETIAS visa.

  1. Who Can Get an ETIAS?

Visitors without any need for a visa to travel to the EU Schengen Zone are eligible for an ETIAS. To date, there are 62 countries whose citizens may apply for an ETIAS visa. Infants and senior citizens are also required to avail an ETIAS visa waiver.

  1. What Will I Need to Apply?

The one thing you will need is your passport. The application can be filled up online, which will take a quick 10 minutes. Details you will need to list are personal & contact information, citizenship, any medical condition or criminal records, and the first EU country you intend to visit. You will also be asked to pay a small fee upon submitting your application. Travelers below the age of 18, however, do not need to pay this fee.

  1. How Long Can ETIAS Be Used?

An ETIAS authorization is valid for 36 months or three years but also until your passport expires, whichever occurs first. You can enjoy travel to any of the countries in the Schengen States for up to ninety (90) days in a six (6) month duration.

  1. Where Can I Travel to If I Get Authorization?

Once approved, you may now visit any of the European countries that make up the Schengen Zone. The EU country you stated you would visit first is going to be the country you can start traveling to as soon as you get your ETIAS visa.

  1. If I Already Have a Visa in One of the Schengen States, Will I Still Need an ETIAS?

No. As long as your visa for one of the Schengen countries is valid, then that alone is enough authorization. A long-term visa from any of the member states gives you the privilege to travel to all the other countries in the Schengen Zone.

The goal of ETIAS is to provide a simple and automated solution to increase safety for travelers and citizens across the whole Schengen Area. The ETIAS also supports the visa liberalization policy promoted by the EU. The ETIAS visa is set to be implemented during 2021, so people visiting or planning to visit the Schengen member states are encouraged to read up on the details of applying for authorization as early as possible.
